Is honing a blade and sharpening a blade the same thing?

no sharpening is just the act of putting the edges back to the right angle and point. Honing is the act of putting a sharp edge on the point that you have just created. A sharp knife will cut but a honed blade will shave. Honing is usually done with a oil stone while sharpening is done on something like a file or grinder.
