Would it be ok to take the legs off a 8 kilowatt multi fuel stove?

We just bought a multi fuel stove to use as a fire in the living room. It cost a staggering �1,000 and we can't fit it into our fireplace with the legs on. The legs will come off but we are wondering if it is safe. Can you help? It would be standing on a foot high slab of Slate. Please help. Thanks :)
